A scanned PDF does not contain text yet

Some PDFs are digital documents with a text layer. You can select their words even if copying them does not always preserve the right order. A scanned PDF is different: each page is an image. Until OCR recognizes the characters, there is no text to copy, search, annotate or edit.

Japanese pages add a second problem. Recognition has to recover not only the characters, but also the structure around them:

• which column comes first;

What kinds of pages work best?

Clear printed Japanese with good contrast produces the strongest result. Both vertical and horizontal layouts are supported, including pages with multiple columns.

Very small or dense print, handwritten notes, damaged pages, decorative type and older scans may require more correction. Complex books can also contain marginal notes or page furniture whose intended order is genuinely ambiguous. How do I know whether my PDF needs OCR? If you cannot select any characters and each page behaves like one large image, it is probably a scan and needs OCR.
